A 20-year-old NEET aspirant from Satna in Madhya Pradesh, who had been preparing for the medical entrance examination in Kota, Rajasthan, has alleged that she was gang-raped in Devangana Valley of Chitrakoot district, Uttar Pradesh, on 22nd July. The incident has drawn attention because the victim is a student who had travelled to the area temporarily, adding to concerns about the safety of young people in tourist and remote locations.
According to the complaint registered with the police, the woman had come to Chitrakoot to meet her 17-year-old boyfriend, a Class 12 student. The couple reached the Devangana Valley tourist spot on a motorcycle and were sitting on a hill when three men arrived on another motorcycle. The men identified themselves as forest department officials. They allegedly assaulted the boyfriend with a belt, tied his hands and feet, and then dragged the woman into nearby bushes, where they sexually assaulted her while issuing threats to prevent resistance or immediate reporting.
The boyfriend later managed to free himself from the restraints. After finding mobile network coverage in the area, he contacted the police and reported the incident. An FIR was registered on the basis of the woman’s statement. Police teams reached the location, began collecting evidence, and started examining available CCTV footage from the surrounding area. One suspect has been detained for questioning, while search operations continue for the other two accused.
Devangana Valley is a known tourist destination in Chitrakoot, and the incident has raised questions about security arrangements at such sites, particularly for young visitors. The fact that the accused allegedly posed as forest officials points to a calculated attempt to gain the couple’s trust before the assault. Authorities are investigating how the men obtained or claimed official identity and whether any broader network or prior planning was involved.
