The political calendar of the Hindi Heartland is filled with anniversaries which are very emotional and which are carefully made arrangements to maintain and increase the momentum of votes. Today is the anniversary of Ram Mandir Bhoomi Pujan on 5th August. As anticipated, “Mainstream State” has mobilized its huge PR machine and is projecting a civilizational climax of a sort and a “Hindu Unity” which is unbreakable ahead of Uttar Pradesh 2027 Assembly elections.

Besides spiritual devotion of citizens which is deep and true, a mature democracy needs strict separation between private religion and public duty. This great ceremony of Ram Mandir Bhoomi Pujan on August 5 not only brings the whole country together, celebrating it in the true spirit, but also unintentionally creates a very powerful distraction which is hard to believe.

Beneath the glossy billboards and prime-time television debates, the reality of Ayodhya is plagued by severe allegations of systemic embezzlement.

One middle-class, general category taxpayer offered their entire life savings to the temple trust from deep faith and devotion. What the temple management returned was a lack of transparency leading to disaster. As recent probe, apart from the amount of the missing funds estimated as about 70 lakh, they have also made a recovery of unaccounted cash from the houses of the petty office employees. But, what raises the most alarm is Truth is, on eight months of important CCTV recordings made at the temple were intentionally deleted from its highly protected counting rooms.

This picture of “Kagazi Vikas” (Paper Development) also brings out the tragedy of economic displacement of the local population caused by the project. Generation after generation of shopkeepers were given very small compensations and asked to vacate their premises so thatRam Path could be widened. However, well-connected bureaucratic cartels were engaged in naked political favor trading and gaining insider advantages. Based on the record land registries, a plot was bought for 2 crore and turned around to the trust for 18.5 crore within just five minutes.

This is the ultimate commodification of faith. The “Mainstream State” utilizes the emotional resonance of the August 5 Ram Mandir Bhoomi Pujan to secure ideological loyalty, while simultaneously providing a protective buffer for the corrupt syndicates that looted the devotees’ contributions.

The people have voiced their disenchantment with this double standard long before. A staggering 54,567-vote loss of the ruling party in Faizabad constituency in the 2024 polls was a clean mathematical condemnation of this corruption. On the occasion of today’s anniversary, the public has to raise its demands higher. Only one honest, objective audit by the CAG can prove that one really respects an ancient place – not political speeches. A religion, no matter how great, must never be the veil to hide a corrupt operation.
