Five minor girls went missing from a government-run girls’ shelter home in the Ratanpur police station area of Begusarai district in Bihar late on the night of 26 July. The facility, managed by the state Social Welfare Department and located near Teliya Pokhar, discovered the absence during the routine morning headcount the next day. Staff immediately alerted the local police, setting off a large-scale search operation across the district and neighbouring areas.
Initial findings suggested the girls cut through a window grille to leave the premises under the cover of night. Superintendent of Police Manish reached the shelter home soon after the report, personally questioned the warden and other staff members, and ordered a thorough inquiry into how such an escape could occur. A special investigation team was constituted under Sadar DSP Anand Kumar Pandey. The team began examining CCTV footage from the shelter home and surrounding localities while technical teams analysed digital evidence for possible leads.
Police issued alerts to all nearby police stations, railway stations, bus stands and major transit points. Search parties conducted raids and combing operations in the district. Coordination was established with the District Child Protection Unit and the Child Welfare Committee to ensure the case received the priority and sensitivity required for missing minors. Authorities explored multiple angles, including possible external assistance, planned escape or any form of negligence in supervision.
The intensive efforts yielded results. Police recovered three of the five girls safely until now. The remaining two continued to be the focus of ongoing search operations, with teams still active in various locations. Officials emphasised that the case remained high priority given the age of the girls and the protective mandate of the institution. No confirmed evidence of abduction or external foul play had been made public at the time the three girls were traced, though all possibilities stayed under active investigation.
The matter has drawn attention to the security protocols and day-to-day supervision inside government-run shelter homes in Bihar. Questions have been raised about the adequacy of physical barriers, night-time monitoring and staff vigilance. Shelter homes are intended to provide a safe environment for vulnerable children, many of whom come from difficult backgrounds. When minors manage to leave undetected, it points to gaps that require immediate administrative review and corrective measures.
Police stated that the search for the two remaining girls would continue without pause until they were located and brought to safety. The recovered girls were reported to be unharmed and were being looked after under proper care protocols. District authorities maintained close coordination between police, child protection bodies and the shelter management to prevent any recurrence and to strengthen systems for the future.
This incident underscores the continuous need for robust monitoring, better infrastructure and accountable supervision in institutions meant to protect children.
