Kanpur: In an incident that has severely dented the image of the Uttar Pradesh Police, a Head Constable has been arrested on charges of gang-raping a 15-year-old girl in Kanpur.
The Incident
According to reports, the crime occurred in the Chakeri police station area. The accused, identified as Head Constable Manoj Kumar (deployed at the local outpost), allegedly conspired with a friend to assault the minor. The victim managed to escape and narrated the ordeal to her family, leading to an immediate complaint.
Swift Action, Lingering Questions
Senior police officials moved quickly to contain the fallout. The accused constable has been suspended immediately and taken into custody along with his accomplice. A case has been registered under the stringent POCSO Act and relevant sections of the BNS.
Chaupal’s Take:
While the prompt arrest is commendable, the involvement of a uniformed officer in such a heinous crime shatters public trust. It raises serious questions about the background checks and psychological profiling of personnel deployed in sensitive roles. For the “Mission Shakti” campaign to succeed, the police force must first purge the predators within its own ranks.
