New Delhi/Washington: A fresh controversy has erupted in Indo-US diplomatic circles following a speech by former US President Donald Trump. In a viral video, Trump recounted a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that the Indian PM approached him asking, “Sir, may I see you please?”

The Controversy
While Trump is known for his hyperbolic storytelling style, the specific framing of the anecdote—depicting the leader of 1.4 billion people as subserviently asking for permission—has drawn sharp reactions back home. Critics in India have termed the remark “bullying” and “patronizing,” arguing that it undermines the narrative of equal partnership often touted by the government.

Political Fallout
The Opposition has seized on the comment to question the “Vishwaguru” (Global Leader) image projected by the ruling dispensation. “Diplomacy is about mutual respect, not subordination,” a senior opposition leader stated. Supporters, however, have dismissed it as typical “Trump-speak,” focusing instead on the strategic ties between the two nations.
