Washington/New Delhi: In a move that reshuffles the deck of global diplomacy, US President Donald Trump has withdrawn the United States from over 60 international organizations. The list notably includes the International Solar Alliance (ISA), a global treaty-based organization co-founded by India and France.

The Executive Order
Signed on Wednesday, the memorandum is titled ‘Withdrawing the United States from International Organisations… that Are Contrary to the Interests of the United States’.
Trump justified the move by labeling these institutions as “redundant,” signaling a return to his hardline “America First” isolationist policy.

Impact on India
The withdrawal from the ISA is a direct setback for New Delhi.

  • Diplomatic Weight: The ISA, headquartered in Gurugram, was India’s bid to take a leadership role in the Global South. US participation was seen as a key endorsement.
  • Green Finance: The exit of the world’s largest economy could slow down the mobilization of funds and technology transfer required for solar projects in developing nations.

The Context
This decision comes in the same week Trump made headlines for his remarks about PM Modi (“Sir, may I see you?”), suggesting a turbulent phase in Indo-US relations despite strategic partnerships. While India pushes for renewable energy at home—with massive projects in Rajasthan and Bihar—the global consensus seems to be fracturing.
