The recent Youth Congress AI Summit Protest in New Delhi has ignited significant debate regarding democracy and dissent in India. On Tuesday, February 24, 2026, Delhi Police arrested Indian Youth Congress (IYC) president Uday Bhanu Chib.

His arrest brings the total number of detainees in this specific case to 8 individuals. The controversy erupted after a group of young political activists staged a shirtless demonstration inside the prestigious Bharat Mandapam.

But why is a simple, non-violent protest triggering such a massive police crackdown in the national capital?

Inside the Anatomy of Youth Congress Protest at AI Summit

Top diplomats and tech billionaires came together last Friday at the AI Impact Summit to discuss technology’s future. Suddenly, IYC workers disrupted the sleek, corporate atmosphere.

They removed their shirts to expose a harsh reality to the cameras. Their message was about India’s severe unemployment epidemic plaguing young people today.

India’s youth unemployment crisis is politically and economically shocking, per World Bank report. Protesters sought to juxtapose these figures with the government’s glossy technological vision.

8 Arrests and counting: Desperate lurches by the State
Delhi police wanted to nip this in the bud and dealt with it brutally. Prior to Chib’s arrest, 7 IYC workers at the spot had already been arrested.
Fascinatingly enough, 3 of these activists were part of the delegation that came from Gwalior, MP itself. It’s amazing to see how widespread this rage amongst youth is in the Hindi Heartland itself.
The message being sent by arresting the national president of a major Youth wing of a political party is that goons will be unleashed and criminal charges slapped on anyone who dare try to disrupt their PR stunts.

Spotlight on Bharat Mandapam as protest venue
The Bharat Mandapam is at the centre of this government’s infrastructure agenda. It was the venue for the recent G20 Summit. It’s the temple of “Viksit Bharat”.
Going shirtless in the multi-crore monument was a stark image. It sought to disrupt the narrative through graphic contrast of homeless joblessness with state wealth.
And that’s why the state cracked down on the protesters at the earliest. This government will not tolerate attacks on its imagery. Bharat Mandapam isn’t a place for dissent, it’s built to collect trophies.

Unemployment vs. Artificial Intelligence

The central problem behind the Youth Congress AI Summit Protest is the fear of automation. While the government is enjoying the benefits of AI, the youth are fearing a huge loss of jobs.

The following are the major problems that are pushing the youth to take to the streets:

•           No basic jobs in the government and private sectors.

•           AI tools making millions of basic jobs redundant.

•           Not considering their demands to fill existing vacancies in the state and central governments.

You cannot feed a starving family with Artificial Intelligence. The government is promoting 21st-century technology but is not providing 20th-century job security to its citizens.

Conclusion: Silencing the Messenger

Throwing Uday Bhanu Chib and 8 other activists into jail will not help the unemployment problem. It just buries the discontent of the youth under the carpet.

When the youth strip off their shirts in the cold weather of February, they are stripping the state of its delusions.

If the government of a democratic nation reacts to a dramatic protest with throwing 8 young leaders into jail, then the real cost of this summit is the cost of freedom of speech.
